Photographing Flowers

I know it may seem like I just Googled rose image and just took one off of there. Sorry to disappoint ooor maybe impress? Yes, this is one of my own photographs and today I will be explaining how easy it it to take images like this one.

Now I’m the type of photographer that uses natural lighting for all my sessions and I love it! So my other half surprised me with this bouquet of flowers and once I saw them, I knew I had to save that moment. Now, I’m not as lucky as all you ladies that get flowers once a week or even a month. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing from my love’s part, but it just makes it that much more special when he does surprise me with flowers.

Sorry! back to the settings. Well for this image I used a macro lens. MY GOD is it fun to shoot in macro. You feel like you have super vision when you put that lens on. Every detail is so crisp and beautiful, quite amazing actually. If you don’t have one yet, I definitely recommend it just for fun. I’ve attached the link below  for a Sigma Marco lens for a Canon if that helps.

After you have you macro lens, for this image I made sure I had a big  open window that I was able to set the flowers in front of. Best lighting I got for this particular image was around eleven a.m. I believe. It honestly depends which way the sun is facing. You want to make sure you don’t get direct sunlight on the flowers. Now after the flowers were placed on a small table I set my camera to ISO of 400. I try not to ever go higher than that because it tends to cause too much noise and you loose the quality of the image. You want to make sure you have a wide aperture setting so anything with 2.8 or more. The shutter speed you want to start off with is 1/125 or more. Do some bracketing and see what feels right when you are in that room. What helps those details pop is using a reflector. If you don’t have one, no big deal, you can use a white foam core board and you can get that at almost any store.

I hope I didn’t lose you you all, but don’t feel bad if things don’t look right the first time. It only gets easier and let your significant other know that you need flowers to practice on as well 😉
